Comics!
We grew up on comics. They helped shape us into the creators we are today. But here’s the thing: as a kid, you probably didn’t actively seek out those first comics. Maybe a sibling had a stash. Perhaps you stumbled across them at a convenience store, or they were there—just begging to be picked from the rack while Mom checked out at the grocery store. Maybe you discovered them tucked away in your parent’s boring newspaper—an entire page dedicated to comics. A little oasis of awesomeness in a sea of sad news. And you fell in love.

That world doesn’t exist anymore. Today’s kids are inundated with apps, phones, video games, social media, and everything else the internet offers. We’re not anti-screen, but we do think most people—kids especially—could benefit from a little less of it.

Today, kids are reading less than ever. It’s not because they don’t love to read—it’s because they haven’t been given the opportunity to fall in love with reading. If they’re reading, it’s often for learning. The fun is gone. The discoverability is gone.

We’re changing that with Hullabaloo, a monthly magazine filled with funny and entertaining comics, mailed directly to their home.

Audience
Our audience is kids ages 8–13. We are looking for ORIGINAL humor, adventure, and slice-of-life comics.

Format: Short Form
Stories or strips that can be completed in 1–2 page installments will have an advantage over longer comics, simply from a logistical standpoint of what we can fit in an issue.

Example: Sunday comics such as Calvin and Hobbes—a self-contained strip with recurring characters.

Format: Longer Form
Serialized comics with installments in the 4–5 page range. A serialized comic should tell a complete story within 25 pages (though it can certainly be shorter). Installments should be 4–5 pages and end with a cliffhanger or lead into the next issue’s installment. The overall storyline will wrap in the final installment, with the potential for a new storyline to begin.

Example: A single 25-page Spider-Man story made up of five 5-page installments.

Rights
You own your work, not us. After it runs in the magazine, you’re free to do whatever you like with it. Make a collection, self-publish, pitch it to publishers, or sell it to Hollywood.

Original Works
You can pitch a completely new idea or do a side story of your existing work. For example, let’s say you’ve created a fantasy graphic novel about a group of characters on a quest to defeat an evil frog demigod wreaking havoc on the kingdom. In Hullabaloo, you could create a side-quest story about how one of the characters gave up their career as a baker to become an adventurer—or maybe tell the tale of how she won her magical sword in the national staring contest championships against the three-time champion cyclops.

Size
Most likely 8.5″ x 11″, but this hasn’t been finalized yet.

Our Mission
Kids reading comics. Promoting creators. Comics thriving! This is the mission of Hullabaloo.

If this is something you want to be a part of, we’d love to hear from you. Contact us with submissions and questions at theeditor@comichullabaloo.com
